The Vagus Nerve and the Body's Brake

The vagus nerve is the longest nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, running from the brainstem down through the neck, chest, and abdomen, touching the heart, lungs, and gut along the way.

Its job, broadly, is to help the body come back down after activation. Heart rate slows,  digestion resumes, and muscles that were braced finally release.

Researchers have studied this for decades under the term vagal tone, essentially a measure of how well this nerve helps the body shift between states of alert and states of rest. Higher vagal tone tends to track with a nervous system that can activate when it needs to and recover quickly afterward.

Lower vagal tone tends to track with a nervous system that struggles to find its way back down, staying keyed up long after the moment that triggered it has passed.

In recent decades this line of research has expanded into broader, more popularized frameworks about the vagus nerve's role in safety and social connection. The underlying physiology, the vagus as a brake on activation, is where the more careful science actually lives.

This is the part that matters for pain. A body organized around the Lock or the Crucible pattern has usually spent years in a state that keeps the sympathetic nervous system, the accelerator, far more active than the vagus, the brake. Over time, the brake gets rusty from underuse. You cannot simply decide to relax a nervous system that has forgotten how.

"the sympathetic nervous system, the accelerator, far more active than the vagus, the brake."

This is why somatic work, rather than willpower alone, tends to reach the vagus nerve more reliably than thought does. Slow, guided breath. Attention brought to the throat, chest, and belly, the very territory the vagus nerve travels through. A nervous system met with repetition rather than a single dramatic effort.

You are not broken if you struggle to feel calm even when nothing is wrong. You are carrying a nervous system that learned its lessons well. The work now is helping it learn new ones.

This is exactly what hands-on work offers that thinking about calm can't.

A nervous system regulation session gives your vagus nerve a direct, physical cue it can register: touch, presence, and connection. Body-Mind awareness, what I call Somatic Intelligence™ (SQ), is the fastest way to strengthen your nervous system.
